Kano, Maiduguri Attacked Again: 13 Killed in Boko Haram, Soldiers Gun Battle

No fewer than 13 people were at the weekend killed in the latest confrontation between the security forces and members of the Boko Haram sect.

The scenes of confrontation were Kano, the capital of Kano State, where 186 people were killed when the sect struck, penultimate Friday, and Maiduguri, Borno State capital.

At the end of the fresh Kano clash, on Friday, one police officer lay dead.

11 Boko Haram operatives were killed in the Maiduguri incident, yesterday.

Earlier yesterday, the sect operatives were credited with the killing of the youth leader of Borno State chapter of the ruling All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in the state capital.

The Boko Haram/security forces confrontation took place just as a section of Igbo leaders rose from a meeting in Enugu asking their kinsmen resident in the north to relocate their wives and children back to the south-east.
The Kano incident occurred at Mandawari  Police Division located about  900 meters to the palace of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero.

In the ensuing exchange of fire from policemen, Idris, who spoke to journalists, yesterday, stated that one of his officers was killed. The gunmen escaped.

The police commissioner revealed that the police recovered from the scene of the clash one AK 47 rifle and AND 3 magazine abandoned by the invaders.

He stated that the scene was littered with blood, an indication that the attackers escaped with bullet wounds.
The late evening shootout triggered pandemonium in the densely populated area of Kano metropolis as sporadic gunshots rented the air following the arrival of the military.

11 suspected Boko Haram members were, in the yesterday incident, killed after soldiers from the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) clashed with them in two wards of Maiduguri.

One member of the sect was arrested during the clash which reportedly lasted 15 minutes.

The arrested member, with injuries, according to security sources, was taken to the University of Maidiguri Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Before the clash, three gunmen suspected to belong  to the Boko Haram sect, attacked the Borno ANPP youth leader, Alhaji Atake, 32, near Mai-Deribe mosque in Bulunkutu ward of Maiduguri.

Liam McIntyre Honors 'Amazing Legacy' of Late Andy Whitfield as 'Spartacus' Returns

Liam McIntyre steps in to lead the rebels as Spartacus on January 27th when STARZ premieres "Spartacus: Vengeance" and says this time the action gets kicked up a notch with battles beyond the arena.

"Instead of one-on-one, which does happen occasionally, it’s army versus army, it gets bigger and bigger," McIntyre tells Fox411.

McIntyre replaces the show’s late star Andy Whitfield,  who died of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma last September.  The actor acknowledges it makes his debut bittersweet.

“No actor wants to start by having another actor’s amazing opportunity have to move on to them… as happy as I am, I’m constantly reminded what a tragedy it is, it’s a shame," he said.

Although he says making the role his own as they continue the series is a tribute to the man who created this memorable part, “As much as I admired his work as a fan from watching before all this happened,  I think if I was to try to copy him,  it would have kind of felt like a shadowy impersonation, and would have just felt a bit average.  I think the thing for me was trying to honor the spirit he brought to the character, which I loved, just as a viewer.  And so, that was a fun challenge, in a way, of trying to honor this amazing legacy.”

McIntyre says he worked hard to prove he could get into gladiator form, “They’d seen me earlier on and I was super skinny for another job, and they went that’s not really one of history’s greatest gladiator’s shape. But they kept training me for like four months, and it was the most intense training I’ve ever thought about, let alone done.  And one day in January they said, you know what, you can have it.”

As for where things kick off in ‘Spartacus: Vengeance,’ picking up where ‘Spartacus: Blood and Sand’ left off, he says it’s all about Spartacus becoming a leader.

“At the end of Season One, it’s quite a triumph, he’s broken free with his rebels. Now he’s, at the very start, very literally on the run the Roman Empire, the Roman Republic.  Times are tough, it’s not quite the happy beginning. It’s 'I need food, I need shelter,' and he’s got a rebel gang to protect, it’s tough times.”

Facebook is expanding its virtual scrapbook feature, Timeline. Now, in addition to letting people see your current and past Facebook activities, you can show them what you're up to elsewhere on the Web.

This is thanks to the new Timeline Apps feature, which allows a new set of apps to grab and post activity from other websites and services into your Facebook Timeline.

For example, if you install the Words With Friends app, all your Words With Friends account activity appears in Facebook.

As of this writing, 80 apps are available, but Facebook has promised to release even more. The apps already available include some big names, including Hulu, Yahoo! News, eBay, Zynga, Rotten Tomatoes and TripAdvisor. A full list is below.

To install Timeline apps, first you need to activate Timeline. Here's how to do that.

Then visit the Timeline Apps page to find apps you want to use. Each app has an install page that shows you what the app does and allows you to adjust its privacy settings.

Not all apps post to Timeline automatically. For some apps, you turn on the "post to Timeline" feature right from the app install page. Others require you to enable from within your Facebook Account Settings.

Go to Account Settings >Apps to manage all your apps. You can set the privacy of each app at any time from there.

In addition to the apps' overall privacy setting, you can control privacy post by post as well. Click the X in the upper right corner of any app post to show or hide it in Timeline.

NLC and TUN goes on Strike Indefinately

The two main Labour Unions in Nigeria - Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union of Nigeria (TUC), has declared in a statement yesterday that workers will begin an indefinite nationwide strike beginning from Monday 9th of January, if the Government does not reverse its decision to remove subsidy.
